Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Health Benefits of Ceremonial Cacao?

Ceremonial Cacao, often consumed in the form of a warm beverage made from ground, whole organic Cacao Beans, has been associated with several potential health benefits. Some of the commonly cited health benefits of ceremonial cacao include:

  • Nutritional Content: Cacao is rich in antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, which may help reduce inflammation and improve heart health.
  • Mood Enhancement: Cacao contains compounds such as phenylethylamine (PEA) and theobromine, which can promote the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, potentially improving mood and feelings of well-being.
  • Energy Boost: The natural stimulants found in cacao, including theobromine and trace amounts of caffeine (similar levels to that in a cup of decaffeinated tea), can provide a steady, uplifting energy boost without the jitteriness often associated with caffeine.
  • Improved Cognitive Function: Some studies suggest that the flavonoids in cacao may have neuroprotective effects, enhancing cognitive function and reducing the risk of cognitive decline.
  • Heart Health: The flavonoids in cacao may help improve circulation and lower blood pressure, contributing to heart health.
  • Spiritual and Emotional Benefits: Ceremonial cacao is often consumed as part of spiritual or mindfulness practices, and its consumption in a ceremonial setting may promote relaxation, introspection, and emotional healing.
  • Digestive Health: Cacao contains fiber, which can support digestive health by promoting regular bowel movements and feeding beneficial gut bacteria.

What makes Wild Craft Cacao different from other Cacao brands?

Wild Craft Tasmania Ceremonial Cacao is distinguished by several factors that set it apart from other cacao brands:

  • Australian Made: We are proud to be one of the very few (and the first!) Ceremonial Cacao provider that is and always has been 100% Australian Made.
  • Sourcing: We focus on sourcing our Cacao Beans from small-scale farmers and cooperatives in the rainforests of Peru, as well as from indigenous communities. This emphasis on ethical sourcing supports sustainable farming practices and ensures that our cacao is of exceptional quality.
  • Quality: The Criollo Cacao Beans we use are carefully selected for their quality and flavor profile. We prioritize heirloom varieties and 100% Organic cultivation methods to preserve the unique characteristics of the cacao.
  • Processing: We employ traditional and artisanal processing methods to preserve the natural integrity of our cacao beans. This may include techniques such as low-temperature roasting and stone grinding, which retain the nutritional content and complex flavors of the Cacao.
  • Ceremonial Focus: We specialise in 'Ceremonial-grade' Cacao, which is specifically intended for use in spiritual or ceremonial contexts. This may involve rituals, mindfulness practices, or healing ceremonies that honor the cacao as a sacred plant medicine.
  • Community Engagement: We prioritise building relationships with the communities from which we source our Cacao Beans. We collaborate with local farmers and indigenous groups, providing fair wages and supporting community development initiatives.
  • Transparency: We are transparent about our sourcing practices, processing methods, and the journey of our cacao from Bean to Block.

What is 'Cacao Bloom'?

'Cacao Bloom' is a natural process, and is a sign of high-quality, untempered, Cacao-Butter-rich and pure Ceremonial Cacao!

When the Cacao butter in Ceremonial Cacao (or Chocolate) undergoes a transformation due to temperature changes, it creates a mesmerizing effect on the surface and within. You might notice beautiful swirls or delicate patterns forming, or changes in texture, giving your chocolate an artisanal touch.

It shows that the Cacao Butter within the block is responding to its environment, showcasing the craftsmanship that went into its creation. It is naturally beautiful; almost 'alive' ~ constantly transforming, responding and evolving.

Cacao Bloom doesn't compromise the taste or quality of your Ceremonial Cacao in any way

What is the difference between Ceremonial Cacao and Cacao powder?

Ceremonial-grade cacao is made the the 'Whole Cacao Bean!'. Nothing has been added or removed in the process.

It is made from premium quality Beans, often from specific regions, and processed traditionally to preserve its natural flavor and nutrients. It's used in ceremonies or rituals for its spiritual significance. Importantly, it is made using the Whole Bean!

Regular cacao powder, on the other hand, can vary in quality and processing. It's usually made through industrial methods for cooking or baking, focusing more on consistency and convenience than preserving the cacao's unique qualities. Cacao Powder has had almost ALL of the Cacao Butter removed.

Ceremonial Cacao is a much creamier product, resembling a block of 100% dark chocolate - it is rich, high in Cacao Butter and well balanced in flavour, and holds the incredible health promoting properties of the Cacao Bean.

How many grams of Ceremonial Cacao should I consume?

If you are new to Ceremonial Cacao, I recommend starting with a lighter dose ~ approximately 10g of Ceremonial Cacao, and see how you feel. If you feel like increasing this dose, take it slow and try an extra 5g per day. Observe how you feel emotionally and physically during the day, and take notes!

Your desired dose may change day-to-day. If I have a Cacao in the evening, when I go out for example and want a little energy boost that won't keep me up all night, I like to take around 10-15g.

My favourite dose most mornings is 20g ~ although to some this may be too strong! I feel that this carries me through the day, I feel balanced, energise but still grounded and calm.

A 'Ceremonial' dose may be up to 40-45g. I personally do not take this dose lightly, and prepare myself both energetically and emotionally if I plan to hold a Cacao Ceremony for myself or others.

It is important to acknowledge that there is no 'one size fits all'. A lighter dose could be the perfect amount for you during the day, or in Ceremony.

Trust and know, that no matter how many grams, the Cacao will interact within our body and mind and provide the Medicine we need.

Can I consume Ceremonial Cacao during Pregnancy and while breastfeeding?

I personally have enjoyed Ceremonial Cacao during both of my pregnancies, and have savoured every last sip during my five and a half year journey of breastfeeding!

The health benefits that I have experienced have been profound , and absolutely life-changing during this season for me. Cacao has served as a support both emotionally and physically, and has helped me to connect with myself in a new was as a Mother. Ceremonial Cacao has served as a change to incorporate moments of self-care into my busy routine. It has also been a gentle source of energy to help me flow through the day, during times of teething babies and wakeful nights!

I recommend seeking advice from a trusted health care provider before taking Ceremonial Cacao during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and doing your own research, to determine if this is right for you and your baby.

With Love, from one Mama to another!

How do I use the Cacao?

A favourite and common way to use Ceremonial Cacao is in a warm beverage. I love 20g of chopped ceremonial cacao, whisked into warm milk with a teaspoon of pure honey.

It can also be made into sweets, treats and any chocolatey recipes.

I have a few recipes that you can check out here.

I share more information, recipes and 'how to prepare and make' videos on our Wild Craft Instagram page!

Enjoy!

With Love and Gratitude,
Paula
